Hatefully Beautiful
October 2, 2008 · 2 Comments
i’ve got a dear friend, Josh Avis, who currently refuses to blog (i’m trying to convince him), and he sent me this link today and it was everything i needed to hear. these words come from the epic theologian and thinker, Oswald Chambers. This excerpt is from his daily study called ‘My Utmost For His Highest’. a quick and amazing daily read (totally recommend it as a daily thought provoker)! i read this and i thought, ‘Hatefully Beautiful’. Check this out (also, if you want to read more click here:
After every time of exaltation, we are brought down with a sudden rush into things as they really are, where it is neither beautiful, poetic, nor thrilling. The height of the mountaintop is measured by the dismal drudgery of the valley, but it is in the valley that we have to live for the glory of God. We see His glory on the mountain, but we never live for His glory there. It is in the place of humiliation that we find our true worth to God— that is where our faithfulness is revealed. Most of us can do things if we are always at some heroic level of intensity, simply because of the natural selfishness of our own hearts. But God wants us to be at the drab everyday level, where we live in the valley according to our personal relationship with Him. Peter thought it would be a wonderful thing for them to remain on the mountain, but Jesus Christ took the disciples down from the mountain and into the valley, where the true meaning of the vision was explained (see Mark 9:5-6 , Mark 14-23 ).
“If you can do anything . . . .” It takes the valley of humiliation to remove the skepticism from us. Look back at your own experience and you will find that until you learned who Jesus really was, you were a skillful skeptic about His power. When you were on the mountaintop you could believe anything, but what about when you were faced with the facts of the valley? You may be able to give a testimony regarding your sanctification, but what about the thing that is a humiliation to you right now? The last time you were on the mountain with God, you saw that all the power in heaven and on earth belonged to Jesus— will you be skeptical now, simply because you are in the valley of humiliation?

Sonoma, Special Olympics and good family…
August 18, 2008 · 1 Comment
This past weekend I got to be with my love (promise) and my family in beautiful Sonoma County California. I have an Aunt and Uncle who live in Windsor, CA and they’re both doing some really amazing things to give back to those on the fringes.
You see my Uncle Steve, who I only knew in my 1st year on this earth (if that counts for knowing him), lived his life with Down Syndrome. He died when he was 13 back in 1982. From the stories I’ve heard about this kid he was a RIOT! There was never a dull moment with Uncle Steve and he lived as happy as a kid could. It was cool to hear some of the stories about him from his siblings this weekend, truly just a joy to everyones lives!
Well, my Aunt Susie and her husband Barry have taken on a project in his honor and this year marked the 10th anniversary of the ‘Steve Wurzell Memorial Tennis Tournament: Benefiting the Sonoma County Special Olympics’.
My Aunt writes for the Business Journal in Sonoma County and I believe she is really using the platform she’s been given/worked hard for to work towards bringing a ray of hope to these people who live mentally, physically and emotionally challenged. Barry is also a lawyer in the area and is a huge support to what they’re doing.
The tennis tournament draws business leaders, corporations, wine industry types and, quite honestly, rich people to come out and give back. Friday they do a big tennis tournament that these folk compete in for some trophies and I’ll just say these people are pretty into winning a trophy. Later that night they do a HUGE event at a local winery called Rodney Strong. Each person buys a seat at dinner for some wild price and it’s a FANTASTIC night of honoring these amazing people who live their lives with some challenges.
ALL of the proceeds go back to COMPLETELY fund the Sonoma County Special Olympics. COMPLETELY FUND! anyways…I think that’s pretty amazing.
I was talking with my Aunt, yesterday, and she said that she set out 10 years ago with a vision to get funding for these kids, but, could have NEVER dreamed that they’d now be responsible for FULLY funding this program that for many of these kids is one of their only lifelines.
One of my favorite parts about the event on Friday night was that they brought out the Special Olympians in a procession complete with Police Escort, torch, t-shirts, medals and US (the FANS). As the brought them in my Aunt had something even more special arranged for them…A HELICOPTER FLYOVER from the sheriffs department. I mean she done did it and she did it good!!! it was amazing. they came in through the dinner tables, we high fived them and they went to the stage where they just got cheered for and loved on. My Aunt took the time to write something very unique about each of the Olympians and would make it very personal to EACH of the kids. It really was quite amazing and it made me proud to know that we run the same blood.
I have to be honest though…it’s got me thinking…what am i doing to contribute to the Kingdom of God? I really believe that what my Aunt is doing is Kingdom work. She spends her time, money and heart with these kids and their caretakers (not to mention she has 5 of her own kids) just pouring everything she has into this program for these kids.
here’s a link to an article written about the sonoma special olypmics:
What’s got you thinking and dreaming today, this week, this year? short or long term. sound off!

Gay Marriage, Church, Politics and Christian Music
August 6, 2008 · 13 Comments
My brother plays in a band called Future of Forestry and they recently ran across a situation that really posed for some tough decisions. The following is a blog that Eric Owyoung, their lead guy, posted on their myspace. read the blog. i’d love to hear your thoughts on what role we as Christ followers play on an issue like Gay Marriage. what role should the church play on the issue and maybe more specifically as it relates to voting and the political realm? lastly, if you took a 30,000 foot view of how the church is and has dealt with the Gay and Lesbian community in this past 30 years to present what would you have to say about it?
Put in the position that the band was what would you have done? i know there is a tendency to jump to what feels like the ‘right Christian answer’. but take a second, read this and think about some of the questions and then sound off. good food for thought and let’s stay away from gay bashing and actually use our minds before we just respond.
here’s the blog entry from Eric:
FUTURE OF FORESTRY CANCELS HEADLINING SAN DIEGO PERFORMANCE 8-8-08 TO AVOID GAY RIGHTS POLITICS
I have told my fan-base that they will be attending a worship concert. If they are not getting exactly that, then I can’t play with integrity.
Four months ago, I called a promoter/friend to request putting together a Future of Forestry headlining concert focused on worship with one or two opening bands. What started as such became an event called “8-8-08.” Eight bands, eight speakers. Just 5 days before the event, I was informed that a part of the messages that will be spoken will involve a campaign rallying together voters against same-sex marriage in our state.
I went into this show to play music and bring people into a worship experience. I do not understand how this political discussion got involved. I have asked, pleaded, begged that the event would omit any discussions of gay rights but have been refused. I cannot play this concert with integrity. This is not what I signed up for.
I was told not to be concerned because any messages spoken about gays would be “truth spoken in love.” But we live in a culture where people, Christians, even conservative Christians disagree on how to approach subjects such as gay rights. We MUST realize and be sensitive to the reality that even IF they agree on a Biblical interpretation, Christians still must choose their way of approaching homosexuality in our culture. I don’t expect my band-members to agree on the subject and they don’t. So I don’t bring it up on stage.
I WENT INTO MUSIC TO PLAY MUSIC
I reserve the right not to involve the music of Future of Forestry in this political discussion. I have been told this isn’t a political discussion but a Biblical one. But when we are talking about laws, voters, and legislation, we are talking about politics. Fine, you call it a Biblical/Political issue, but never the less, it is still political.
I went into music to play music. I was challenged by the promoter to step up to the subject rather to step out. But I have no desire whatsoever to get up to a microphone and describe, debate, or publicize my political views on gay rights. I have told my fan-base that they will be attending a worship concert. If they are not safe to get exactly that, then I can’t play with integrity.
A CALL TO SPEAK CLEARLY
I told you that the promoter of this a good friend. And he is a good person. There is nothing malicious in his endeavors. He is extremely passionate and unafraid. What was missing in this situation though was clear and timely communication about what was involved before it was too late. As an artist and person, I deserve a choice whether or not to be a part of an event involving such a sensitive subject. Not to be told afterwards.
Promoters, Pastors, Event Organizers, I urge you to speak clearly and with integrity to artists as well as people going to the show about the content of the events you are putting on:
“Hey, Eric, I am putting on a worship concert with a ten minute Obama (or McCain) plug. Do you want to be a part of it?”
“No thank you. Maybe next time.”
“Hey, Eric, I am putting together a basketball game with a ten minute intermission talking about gay rights. Do you want to play?
“No thank you. I’m too short. Please call me when you want to just play music.”
In the end, I believe the intensions for “speaking in love” are merited. But whether they are spoken harshly or lovingly, I just ask that a Future of Forestry worship concert not be a political platform. Is that too much to ask for? Talk about gay rights in your homes, talk about it at work, most of all talk about it in your voting booths. I am sure that I will too. But why INSIST that it needs to be talked about in worship?
THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE
I play music because it is the universal language of all people. Blacks, whites, males, females, gays, and straights. I play music because I believe it will draw people together and draw people closer to God. I leave the political discussions up to my own conversations and my own right to vote. But in this creative space called music, I will fight to have a place where we are all safe to be loved and embraced by God through every tone and every note that is played. This is the nature of worship music.
To the Forestry fans that were excited to see our hometown concert, I am very sorry and sad that we will not be playing. We promise to put together a smaller show soon in the San Diego area. No politics, no basketball…just music.
(Future of Forestry will not be performing, but the event has not been cancelled. If you intended on going to the event to see the other 7 bands or 8 speakers, they will still be performing)
THINK AND RESPOND!!!

Mark 1
July 17, 2008 · 4 Comments
I spent some time just kind of soaking up scripture, prayer and a bit of some ideas on the Resurrection from N.T. Wrights book ‘Surprised by Hope: rethinking heaven, the resurrection and the mission of the church’. it was a fantastic time of private worship.
I read out of Psalm 22, Daniel 1 and Mark 1. all of the scripture was beautiful and good for my hear today, but, Mark 1 really stood out to me this morning. i really would encourage you to go have a look at it and just see what things you might grab from the short little passage.
The major themes i really grabbed as i watched the thread of Jesus in this passage were these following points (starting from the top of chapter 1 to the end of chapter 1):
1. Healing
2. Rest in me
3. Simplify
4. trust firmly through adversity and watch God work
5. Healing
I love that the book ends on Mark 1 show Jesus healing. He is the Healer, Restorer, Satisfier, Hope Giver, Abundant Life, Prolific Physician, Sustainer, Guide, Hope, Hand Holder and Re-definer. I wonder if you read that passage and find anything like i’ve found.
I’m excited to continue to read out of Mark in my time with God and i’d love to invite you to join me along the journey of reading the Gospel of Mark. i’m not gonna set a time frame, but, just maybe throw out the invitation.
I really would love to hear what you learn out of Mark 1 and i’d also ask did anything God showed me this morning resonate with you as you looked at Mark 1?
here’s the link to read it online! MARK 1 (NIV)
Comment away and let’s be an avenue of healing, rest, simplicity, trust and more healing to each other and to all we come into contact with today and beyond!

N.T. Wright on The Colbert Report…
July 12, 2008 · 4 Comments
take a look at this video and ask yourself the question…is it possible that many of us have an extreme misunderstanding of what heaven is or isn’t and how does that shape how we live today if we do?! listen in and hit me back!
NT Wright is one of my most favorite Author/Thinker/Theologian! also check out his new book, which i’m reading right now, called Surprised by Hope. this book is blowing my mind and a lot of preconceived ideas of heaven. in my opinion this book is a must have:
what are your thoughts?
