Dr. John Hubley :: Worship

“LORD, TEACH US TO WORSHIP!”

Interesting that the disciples of Jesus never asked this. In not making this request, they assumed they could worship on their own, that they had not to learn how to worship. The phrase ‘learning to worship’ sounds strange to us today. If our heart doesn’t overflow and begin to worship by itself, we say, we’ll never ‘learn’ how to worship. But it‘s a dangerous error, very widespread among most Christians, to think that the heart can worship rightly by itself. For then we confuse wishes, hopes, sighs, styles—all of which the heart can do by itself—with true worship. We then confuse earth with heaven, man with God. Worship doesn’t mean simply to pour out one’s heart. It means rather to acknowledge the awesome glory of Christ and to submit to him as Lord, whether the heart is full or empty. No one can do that by oneself. For that he needs Jesus Christ.

When Jesus joins us in his worship of the Father, when we are privileged to worship along with him, when he lets us see the awesome glory of the Father and engages us in his worship, then we are free from vain worship. And that is precisely what Jesus wants for us. He wants to worship with us and have us worship with him, so that we know intuitively that the Father accepts our facedown obeisance to Christ in his vicarious death and resurrection. When our will whole-heartedly enters into Christ’s worship of the Father in the Spirit, he has taught us to worship in spirit and in truth. Lord teach us such worship.

PLEASE REGISTER BY WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14TH, 2010!!

Seminar objectives:
(1) To present the true worship of the triune God though the study of keystone passages of Scripture relating to the five major themes.
(2) To apply these truths to the ministries of pastors and worship leaders in the practice of corporate worship, whatever their organizational associations.

The biblical concepts and principles of worship covered in the seminar integrate into whatever traditional or contemporary forms or styles of corporate worship pastors and worship leaders embrace. It’s the view of this seminar that the Holy Bible is the inspired Word of God and therefore the sola Scriptura of wisdom about true worship.

It is also the view of this seminar that the culture of worship services in the churches of Christ, from the ancient past to the present moment, are the product of the Holy Spirit when they lift up Jesus Christ as the risen, crucified and ascended LORD. The seminar focuses wholly upon biblical passages and principles of worship.

Limits…

We’ve been dialoguing with high school students all weekend up here at the State Youth Convention in Flagstaff, AZ. It’s been a great weekend and we’ve been doing a break out session with the students on Arts, Justice and the Local Church. We’ve had fascinating dialogue with the students and they drew out some great realities.

My question for you is this:

1. Do you feel like the local church unleashes the Arts to their potential?

2. What are ways you, personally, feel limited in your local church as it relates to the art in you?

3. What do you dream about seeing the local church doing with the arts?

Come on now, let’s be bold, answer the questions and let’s dialogue on this thing and dream together on how the arts can effect our influence in the world.

All of us Brayline guys were encouraged to hear students talk about how the Arts and how they could be unleashed in a whole new way in the church. I love the idea that the Arts could, possibly, be one of the most untapped evangelistic tools in the box. What would it look like if our local communities encouraged the Arts at the highest level. I contend that our influence and effect in our society for the Kingdom of God would have profound and fresh results.
SOUND OFF!!

The Rhythm @ Cornerstone – Chandler, AZ

our community, Cornerstone, here in AZ has a real heartbeat to be apart of ‘reaching people nobody else is reaching’. we’ve got various ministries that we offer and do within the Phoenix Valley, but, i think what is about to launch in september on Thursday nights is going to be prolific.

we’ve had this sense for a while that we need to begin to dream about a post-college singles community (20’s to 30’s) that would provide a place of identity for this large group of people in the Phoenix Valley. we dreamt, prayed, thought about, talked about and now we’re gonna be about creating a place for these people.

right now, that we know of, we’re really not seeing a dedicated multi-generational, multi-ethnic church community that is rallying and focusing in on Single adults within the Phoenix Valley. the unique part about Cornerstone is that we do have a wide array of ages, socio-economic, faith journeys, denominational backgrounds, etc… within the larger umbrella here. but, i LOVE to see us being a group of leaders that are forward thinking in who we AREN’T reaching.

God has blessed us with an incredible guy named James Patterson who had a decent sized Singles ministry in Tampa, FL called 97 West and for whatever reason God has put the move on his families heart to move to this cactus stricken desert of Chandler, AZ to take this ministry on here. james and i have quickly become good friends, he’s just one of those kindred spirits.

we’re calling it The Rhythm and i love what james says about it: ‘it’s not just an event to attend, but, a movement to be a part of!’. i’m stoked to see what God could do with this thing and i think there is much to be said about what’s next.

right now, i’m kind of steering alongside james with my team the direction for the programming of the gathering times and community. we’ve got some KILLER stuff in the plans. just numerically in our community we have over 2,000 singles in our church and that’s just IN OUR CHURCH. hahaha. how many more in the Phoenix Valley that are longing for connection with Jesus and other people like them.

we couldn’t be more excited. the launch date is set for September 11th, 2008!
